The art of animation is more accessible to artists today, presented in many forms from classical, frame by frame cell animation to stop motion and 3D animation. It may have come a long way from its origins, but much of the concepts behind moving images, as well as developing the characters and stories which they portray haven’t changed at all.

Increasing technological advancement may have been providing us with increased entertainment, means for communication, tools for discovery and even life saving abilities. However, we must be weary of the natural balance, as the negative forces which we have been suppressing have already begun to fight back. Viruses are morphing into super-viruses, lakes and rivers are violently reclaiming their natural paths and animals are showing their strain from being harvested for generations.

A million monkeys at a million typewriters would eventually recreate the entire works of Shakespeare. This idea from the infinite monkey theorem may be an analogous interpretation regarding the vastness and possibilities within infinite randomness, but the scientists, mathematicians and philosophers who have contributed to such studies may not have been paying attention to the actual abilities of ‘inferior’ creatures such as primates.

By now, we should all be aware of the power of digital manipulation and how you shouldn’t take every picture you see at face value. This infamous Redbook magazine cover starring Faith Hill is yet another example of how digital trickery is used everyday. Only as digital representations can stars get prettier, younger and closer to perfection as they age.

While we fully promote individuality and creativity, it is views such as from this student that makes me question the priorities of tomorrow’s leaders.

Specific algebraic equations and the GDP of Peru may not play a role in the ‘real world’, but all of the processes involving problem solving, research, social interaction and critical thinking will probably continue forever.

Studies have shown that we are getting less sleep, less exercise and less real world interaction. Television and video games are turning our kids into zombies, the mass media is blinding us from the truth and the internet is drawing us into a world of virtual interaction full of cryptic characters instead of real emotion.
